Yep, slept well. It’s not often I wake up after 6! I did still manage to see the sunrise… I love the moment that the sunlight touches the tops of the trees 😊
I had 18km to run to today and we spent yesterday afternoon trying to work out how I could get it done safely on the surrounding roads. Andrew somehow managed to uncover a local 11.5 mile rail trail alongside the Ashokan Reservoir from Woodstock Dike to Boiceville Bridge. A small piece of rail and the cut through hills are reminders of its heritage.
The trees were still bare along the path, with a slight tinge of red buds appearing. There were also only a couple of spots of flowers along the way – happydils, and some daisys that all had their faces turned to the sun… there’s something in that 🌼
The Reservoir provides the drinking water to New York. Construction was completed in 1915, submerging thousands of acres of farmland across 12 communities. It’s hard to imagine how that would be achieved today.
The beauty of a rail trail is that it’s pretty well guaranteed to be wide, straight and flat – pretty unusual for a long run! It had a gentle incline for the first 10k, and a slight downhill for the remainder. The one corner was definitely worth a photo 😂
We paused at Woodstock for lunch. Interesting that the place that refused to hold the iconic Festival in 1969 makes such a big deal of it today with many shops having a distinct 60s music and peace flavour. The actual festival was held about 65km South at a farm in Bethel. The town is like many others in the area… feels like a step back in time.
Back to the campsite for another round of campfires, s’mores (sans chocolate), and a good dose of the Masters on the iPad. It’s been a day of perfect blue skies with not a cloud to be seen. Couldn’t have asked for better!
