While the main purpose of this part of our trip is to spend time with family, we’re still keen to show the girls some of the local area. Derby is a beautiful part of the midlands, surrounded by rolling hills and dotted with industry. It was the birthplace of DH Lawrence, home of Beatrix Potter and backdrop for a number of TV shows set in the British countryside.
As a child I remember going on day trips to Matlock and Bakewell and I think we’ve visited these places every time we’ve come back to the UK, so they were a must-do on my list for the girls.
Matlock is a pretty town at the South Eastern end of the Peak District. One of the most significant sites in the area is the Arkwright spinning mill. Sir Richard Arkwright is considered to be the ‘Father of the Industrial Revolultion’ as he invented the first water-powered cotton spinning mill. His organisation of workers is said to have laid the foundation for the modern day factory. Today Matlock and Matlock Bath are quaint towns on the Derwent (yes, like the pencils) river, that are hard to imagine as thriving industrial towns.
Matlock was also a lovely place to be on Christmas Eve. A small brass band was playing in the Main Street (had to be freezing their fingers off!) and there was a lovely festive feel.
Derby is also the site of Chatsworth House. This stately home was the residence of the Duke of Devonshire, and is set on magnificent grounds. It was also home of Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice so it may look familiar! Sadly, it had closed for the winter break the day before we arrived, but it’s definitely one to see next time. If nothing else, the surrounding towns and the walk through the grounds were worth the drive.
A few cups of tea and a bit of Christmas shopping later and it was time to wait for Santa. While he technically only visits the girls in Brisbane, it’s still an exciting night 🙂 Luckily, there’s plenty of space to work off the excitement in South Wingfield!
