It can be a challenge finding places for women to run alone safely in a new city. Pascal gave me the tip to head South West to Federico Garcia Lorca Park. At sunrise (8:00!!!) on a Tuesday morning it was just me and the ducks, but it’s clear that this would be a park filled with families and friends playing games on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

I’m always interested to understand what someone did to earn their name on a park or monument… in this case, Federico was a Spanish poet, playwright, and theatre director in the early 1900s. He was assassinated at age 38 at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.

The park is filled with roses, jasmine and pomegranate trees which are a symbol widely used in Granada. They also feature heavily in Rachel’s recipes and treasured items – constant reminders of a place she loves so much.

This walk also uncovered my next round of quirky items… Granada’s crossing people! There are a range of different styles and animations, and it’s so good to see some creativity!

Our goal for this part of the trip is to do the things that Rachel loved to do around Granada. She often talked of sardines and anchovies on the beach, so Eric and Pascal bundled us into the car to find lunch.

First stop, drinks at Motril where they have shared a few memorable lunches. The sardines and octopus were being smoked on the beachfront while the a few remaining end-of-summer tourists swam in the sea. There are some great photos of Rachel and The Boys in this place, always happy. It’s a pretty spot that helped me appreciate why some other restaurants in Australia captured her attention.

The boys have recently found a new favourite restaurant, Sunahra Beach Club. It’s so nice having locals ready to order for you… a great mix of their favourites with some new additions!

The ‘sand’ is dark and gritty and the seabed drops away very quickly. The wind had picked up and the grey skies created a dramatic scene. Apparently a few weeks ago you wouldn’t have come near this beach due to the crowds of people… today we pretty much had it to ourself.

My inner child couldn’t go to the beach without putting my feet in the water… it’s just not right! Pretty happy with the water temperature, although none of the others were keen to join me.

It’s so good to immerse in the experiences Rachel loved so much in Spain, with the people who make it ‘home’.

The full moon rose over the Alhambra tonight… can’t wait to explore tomorrow!

Love M & BB x
