Giant snowflakes swirled down the streets as we emerged in Tromsø this morning. The snow really has been a highlight for the girls who had never seen it fall from the sky before. A beautiful white end to our time in Tromso.

There are a whole lot of extra logistics for a cold climate airport that had never occurred to me. We taxied to the end of the runway, and then sat while the de-icing dude came and removed ice from the wings. I don’t think we have one of these machines at BNE…

The benefit of flight is the view from above. As we lifted off, we were able to enjoy Tromso blanketed in snow. Then, up above the clouds we enjoyed glimpses of the large golden ball in the sky that we haven’t seen for over a week, before descending back to snow-covered Oslo.

The Oslo Christmas Markets are still going, so we headed into town in search of mulled wine. It’s always nice to see familiar sights in a foreign land… the abandoned Lime Scooter was calling me to move it aside, ponder why someone would have left it there in the first place, and spend the next km in a debate about the merits (or otherwise) of scooters ; )

The markets were more commercial than Christmasy, so it was a fairly familiar array of shops selling beanies and gloves, interspersed with food!

The (very snowy) ice rink in the middle of the markets caught the eye of the girls. It’s one of those ‘only in Europe’ things, so they hired skates and off they went…

The next couple of days will be big sight-seeing days around Oslo. The sleepiness and dark of Svolvær and Tromsø will make way for the fast pace and bright lights of a big city!
