Today was officially the earliest start of the trip – out of the door at 4:40 to be on a bus to Bergen airport at 5:00. Our flight from Bergen to Oslo was delayed as a result of storm delays last night, and also the Oslo to Reykjavik flight due to storms today… scheduling flights around here at this time of year must be a challenge!
Norway turned on beautiful blue skies as we left. It’s such a rugged landscape that looks so different depending on the snow.
We gathered that there had been some serious weather events in Iceland that had delayed flights, but didn’t expect the notification that it was too windy to land. We circled for a while, observing the ice grow on the wings and the rough sea below, before a wild landing. The snow ploughs were racing around the tarmac, and the plane was shuddering in the wind at the gate.
Flights had been delayed, the road from the airport to the city had been closed, city streets were flooded, and many tours had been cancelled for the day. Clearly this had been a massive storm for the region… sometimes its good not to know what you’re heading into, and to have faith in the aircraft engineers!
We don’t have a lot of time in Reykjavik, so raced out while there was light. We headed to the foreshore, and captured our first glimpses of this rugged, mountainous island.
There’s a great sculpture on the waterfront – The Sun Voyager. It’s a modern interpretation of an old ship… which reflects my initial impression of Reykjavik.
Wandering back, the storm had delivered a coating of snow, a great opportunity to carefully sculptre Olaf III complete with eyebrows!
So it’s been quite an adventurous start to our Iceland adventure! Iceland… it certainly is!
