One last adventure before we handed ‘Sandy’ back – Cape Cod, south of Boston. We headed off early to avoid the traffic and made it to Plymouth before the locals had emerged for the day. It’s known as ‘America’s Hometown’ as the site of the landing of the pilgrims on the Mayflower in 1620. The replica ‘Mayflower II’ sat calmly in the quiet bay.

We had thrown our togs in the car and we first hit the beach at Brewster in the bay. We quickly realised that there would be no swimming today… water temp of about 8 degrees is a little fresh even on a 30 degree day! It’s a lovely spot, so it’s such a shame that the wealthy locals don’t want to share it. Thank goodness for our Councils in Australia!

We then headed to the surf beach at Eastham. The Coast Guard has a quite a presence on top of the hill so I’m assuming that they get more surf than we saw today. The erosion of the dunes suggests it can get pretty wild. Funny, despite this being a public beach no one was swimming here either. Can’t imagine why!

Final stop at Cape Cod was Chatham, perfectly timed for a lobster roll for lunch. Absolutely hideously expensive for a little beachside shop (no prices should have been a clue!), and so worth it to be able to enjoy it on a little tucked away beach with only the occasional seagull for company. Perfect way to finish the road trip.

And so the road trip ends. It’s been such a great way to see some of the country. 6 days, 2346km, and 200 songs have taken us through different landscapes, unexpected towns, massive solar and wind farms, streams and hills with remnants of snow. We’ve seen very few party political statements, many interesting houses and people. Great way to travel.

Back to Boston city for bib collection and the race expo! The city was much busier, and you could see that the expo was geared up for big(ger) crowds. All went incredibly smoothly – you can tell they’ve done this before! Love my bib number… it’s prime (quite an achievement for a 5 digit number!) and is a combo of a bunch of numbers that are special to me and theGradyBunch 😊

My suitcase is now officially filled with Boston 2023 merchandise… you only do this once! 😊

love M and theGrady
