We woke to steady rain this morning, so my planned final run around Central Park was replaced with a walk. A final chance to breathe in New York in the Spring before we start the long trip home… it’s pretty clear that I’ve loved the change of season!

It’s funny how much you happen across or can find on foot or by road. This morning I found our mate Hamilton hanging out somewhere in the depths of Central Park. Don’t ask me to find him again though 🙂

Bags packed, we headed down towards the Hudson, West of our hotel. Little did we know that we were about to walk Riverside Drive, West End! It’s mile after mile of path along the river, filled with cyclists and runners. Sound familiar… it’s a sign 😂

A couple of final thoughts about NY. Over the past 4 days I’ve been as fascinated by the subway underground as I have by spring above ground! How does this city sit on top of it? Who coordinates the trains and timetable? What does the network actually look like? How do they avoid major wind/ suction issues? What happens when the network breaks down? How does Google maps know exactly which exit? How do they manage all the advertising? How did they work out all the payment gates? Unsurprisingly, I’ve ended up with a massive collection of random images, and reckon I could spend a fortnight in NY just checking out stations and learning how the whole thing fits together!!!

Along with the subway my other fascination has been the style of the residential buildings. New York is known for the skyscrapers, but it’s the 3-4 story townhouses and older buildings that bring so much character to the city. Whether it’s by direction or design, it’s great to see the history preserved.

We’re now at Newark after one of the most adventurous trips to an airport ever… lugging bags through subways, trains, air trains, stairs, escalators, unclear directions, baggage lines and security checkpoints. San Francisco, Brisbane… home 🙂
